Artist Statement |
"
Nothing to Fear" was inspired by the documentary "Sharkwater" by filmmaker Rob Stewart.
As a diver, it has been my privilege to spend many hours with these magnificent animals, and so for me, I know they are indeed nothing to fear. Hammerheads probably embody the 'alien, scary' shark for a lot of people, despite the fact that there are no reported attacks by this species.
The ghostly images of the schooling sharks represent the fact that unless we take action against the practice of finning, there will indeed be nothing to fear, as shark populations have declined by 90% over the past 50 years.
The condemned cylinder represents our failure to act, and stands as a monument to a vanishing species."
Currently living and working in Brisbane, Australia, Jane received her degree in Fine Art from the University of Tasmania. Jane has a lifelong involvement with the sea and marine conservation and is an exhibiting member of the Australian Society of Marine Artists.
