Art for Sharks and Big Marine Parks 2009

Thank you to all of you who supported Art for Sharks 2009. Now in its third year, Art for Sharks is a major annual fundraiser. Over 40 pieces of fabulous art were donated by artists who are passionate about protecting Australia's precious ocean wildlife. This year's proceeds have gone specifically towards protecting the Coral Sea, a tropical jewel to Australia's north-east.

The evening was a wonderful night supported by wonderful people who have taken us one step closer to leaving a lasting legacy for our over-fished and under-protected oceans.

Some artworks were passed in at auction. If you are interested in puchasing any of these pieces please contact our National Office on 1800 066 299. Note that there are tax breaks for small businesses this year. See below.

Background
The Coral Sea is one of the last places on earth where healthy populations of sharks, marlin and tuna have not yet been severely depleted. It is also a haven for endangered sea turtles, sea birds and a myriad of colourful corals and reef fish and it deserves our protection. Our vision of a Coral Sea Heritage Park will protect 1,000,000 square kilometres of ocean.

Artworks include painting, photography and sculpture, and range in price from several hundred dollars to over $10,000. In an ongoing tradition, many of Australia's top artists have donated their work, as well as emerging stars. Regular contributors include: Ralph Wilson, Fiona McMonagle, Robert Brownhall; we are delighted to announce this year Amanda Marburg, Kate Rohde, Tim McMonagle, Abbey McCulloch and Fergus Binns; See the full artists list and their individual pages to view all works.
Small Businesses
The Australian Tax Office has a relevant tax break for small businesses who wish to purchase art works. Small businesses who purchase art works can claim a 50% deduction on their purchase, which is considered a depreciating asset. In order to be classified as a depreciating asset, the art work must be new, cost a minimum of $1000 and be displayed at the place of business.
